Every tourist receives a visa at customs when arriving in Panama City which is valid for 6 month. Therefore, it is not necessary to prepare anything in advance. You do need a proof of transportation (plane, boat or bus ticket) out of the country before you enter the country of panama to prove your departure.
The Panamanian government offers every tourist free health insurance for 3 month that covers accidents and hospital transportation while you are in Panama. At your arrival you will get an information brochure together with an insurance card.
Important notes about San Jose Costa Rica airport: If you are arriving in San jose “Juan Santamaria” Airport (SJO), please note that even if the name or the airport is San Jose airport, it is actually not IN San Jose city. It is located in a city called Alajuela located 30 minutes from San Jose City. Alajuela is much safer and you do not need to take a cab to San Jose city. We recommend that you find accommodation in Alajuela if you need to spend a night in Costa Rica before taking your local flight to Bocas del Toro or David. Alajuela is much safer than San Jose and you can find accommodation 3 minutes from the airport. If you are not fussy and want a clean budget option, we have stayed at Maleku hostel and they are a clean, cheap and reliable option.
Notes about Panama City accommodation: If you are arriving in Panama City and need to spend one night in the city before catching your local flight, we recommend the hostel Luna’s Castle for a cheap and central location. It is located in the Casco Viejo, where you will see old colonial architecture, nice boardwalk, international restaurant and cafes and you can walk safely in this neighbourhood since it is located in front of the Presidential House. Make sure you ask reception to draw you a map so that you know where to adventure yourself and where not to, since the hostel is also close to a less safe area. This place books really fast so call in advance.
Ciudad de Panama is a big and modern City. In case you have some time to spend there not only it is worth exploring, it also offers great shopping possibilities in case you need to purchase anything. You will find plenty of Hotels and Restaurants as well as Night Clubs and Bars. To get arround we recommend taking a Taxi. There are areas that are not concidered safe at night time, be carefull and use common sense while walking and exploring.
