The place

An experience off the beaten path

Explore the most beautiful waves of Costa Rica, deep in the jungle, still forgotten by mainstream tourism. A perfectly balanced mix of quality surf coaching in small groups, yoga in front of the ocean, and delicious nutritious meals.

Live in the present, make new friendships, play with the dogs, drink coconuts, or nap in a hammock facing the ocean.

The stay

Beachfront living

Fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves, watching the stars from your hammock. An open-air dining and lounge area, an ocean-front yoga platform, and a birdwatcher's paradise: toucans, macaws, green parrots and iguanas around the property.

Choose between shared accommodation, a private room for one or a couple, or bungalows for 2-4 people.

The food

"This is the best food in Costa Rica!!"

— 99.9% of our guests

Start the day with a buffet of fresh fruits, homemade bread, eggs and premium Costa Rican coffee. Lunches and dinners feature salads, soups, and hearty meat and vegetarian dishes: curries, filet mignon, oven-baked gratins.

Vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free meal plans available on request at booking.

The coaching

Personalized surf coaching

A program built from the best practices of reputable French surf schools and ISA surf teacher training. A coach in the water with you at every session, small ratios of max 3 students per coach, and photos and videos of your surfing reviewed together so you understand exactly what to improve.

Your friendly coach reads the waves with you, cheers you on, and keeps you safe.

The waves

The best waves to learn how to surf

Smooth, easy waves ideal for beginners and intermediates. With 12 different surf spots in the area, we take you to the right waves for your level, twice a day.

For experienced surfers, a fast and powerful wave breaks in front of the camp when the swell aligns, and the longest warm-water left point break in the world is a few minutes' drive away.

Beyond the surf

Yoga, horseback riding, nature

Turn off the phone, relax and reconnect with restorative yoga on the ocean-front platform, horseback riding through an indigenous reserve with monkeys, sloths and amazing views, and a chocolate-making workshop with a local artisan.

Cool off in rivers and fresh waterfall oases surrounded by tall rainforest trees.

A game changer — 5 straight years

"We have been attending a week at Surf Expedition for 5 straight years now. There is no better way to consistently improve one's surfing than a structured environment where the waves are amazing, the instruction is outstanding and the food is 'to die for'. Strong emphasis on safety and surf etiquette, video feedback each evening, and daily outdoor yoga. This year we brought 4 members of our family — some started the week 'surf timid' and ended having loved their week in the waves."

Amazing surf experience

"Wow wow wow, what an amazing set up. A week full of the best surf classes you'll ever have with photo/video reviews that allow you to see yourself and make adjustments — crucial for a beginner like me — paired with yoga every day to keep your mind and body relaxed and healthy. On top of that, stomachs full of honestly the best food you've ever tasted. You will leave feeling refreshed, satisfied and excited to come back!"

Best surf experience — pura vida!

"This is my second trip with Surf Expedition. I loved it so much the first time, I brought 4 friends with me this time! Long rides and easy take-offs make this my favorite surf spot ever. Between the beginner/intermediate-friendly waves, the amazing instruction, and the twice daily sessions, I jumped to my next level by the end of the week. And the food... simply amazing. Don't let age be a barrier: as a 60 year-old, the transition to surfing was very attainable!"

Come for the surfing, stay for the food

"A great experience that produces noticeable skill progression. The team thoughtfully plans the daily schedule with two surf sessions, restorative yoga, group video reviews, surf theory lessons, and the most delicious meals. The team scouts multiple local surf spots daily to best match the group's skill level. The waves in south Costa Rica were consistent and our group was frequently the only ones in the lineup. On the last day the group goes on a boat trip across the gulf to surf a reef and enjoy the Osa Peninsula."

World's best place to surf and practice yoga

"I truly recommend Surf Expedition in south Costa Rica to surf and practice yoga. The whole place is amazing, 100% pura vida, surrounded by Costa Rica's jungle and over a beautiful beach. Accommodations are in perfect condition and everything is neat and clean. Surf lessons by the team are first class. The food is really amazing — the wonderful chef prepares the most exquisite meals with lots of love. I can't wait to go back!"

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How should I plan my flights?
Fly into Juan Santamaria (SJO) near San José. Most international flights land in the afternoon, so plan to arrive a day early, then take a regional Sansa Air flight to Golfito (GLF) the next morning. We include a shuttle pickup in Golfito for the latest afternoon flight, and a drop-off for the mid-day flight at the end of the week. A cheaper option: the 7:30am direct Tracopa bus from San José to Paso Canoas — we pick you up at the terminal at 2:30pm.
How do I organize my arrival in Costa Rica?
We can recommend affordable places to stay in Alajuela or San José, 5 minutes from the airport or bus terminal. We work with trustworthy taxi drivers who handle your transport between airport, lodging and terminal, and make sure you get the right bus ticket.
Can I stay an extra night?
Unfortunately it is not possible to stay an extra night.
