Great food, instructors, people and experience! I definitely recommend for anybody.Posted on Kathleen KVerified Hidden gem This is our fourth visit to Seb & Dian’s surf camp, in summary it is a hidden gem. It’s a great experience for beginner and intermediate surfers. Yoga is another main daily feature. Seb is very organized and detail oriented on top of being an excellent surf instructor. The local coaches are knowledgeable and attentive. Dian’s meals are amazing and she accommodates multiple eating styles. The accommodations are rustically comfortable, private and very clean. The grounds are well kept. Don’t look for a/c but keep an eye out for colorful Macaws on the premises. The camp is in southern Costa Rica and well worth the journey. We have made incremental improvements with each visit. There are other activities like massage, horseback riding and chocolate making available. It is all that 😊Posted on Erica DVerified Surf-immersion meets adult summer camp 🌊✨ Very overdue review! Realizing how much solo ladies I've appreciated sharing reviews- so here is mine for Surf Expedition. If you’re a beginner or early-intermediate surfer looking to actually improve in a beautiful, grounded setting, this place is magic.I spent a long time researching the right surf trip—somewhere that wasn’t touristy, had real instruction, good people, and just the right amount of structure. Surf Expedition delivered on all fronts, and then some. Sebastian and Dian are incredibly thoughtful hosts, and their whole team creates a vibe that’s supportive, organized, and welcoming without being overly curated or intense.✔️ Surf coaching was top-tier—two in-water sessions a day, small student-to-teacher ratios, and super helpful video reviews each night.✔️ Waves were consistent and crowd-free, which made all the difference in learning without stress.✔️ Daily yoga helped a ton with flexibility, recovery, and staying centered.✔️ The food? Next level. Every meal was nourishing, fresh, and made with so much care (thank you, Dian!).✔️ Extra adventures like a waterfall hike, beach bonfire, and optional horseback rides or massages made it feel like more than just a surf trip.✔️ The group dynamic was easy and fun—people from all over, no egos, just a shared love of being in the water and trying something challenging.Honestly, it felt like a surf-immersion meets adult summer camp, and by the end, most of us were already scheming how to come back next year. If you’re looking for a meaningful mix of ocean time, connection, and growth, I can’t recommend this retreat enough. 🏄♀️💫🌴Posted on Explorer21183874760Verified Surf Expedition - great surf instruction in Costa Rica! Our family of 4 had 2 terrific surf lessons with Surf Expedition near Pavones, Costa Rica. They worked with us to accomodated our travel schedules, coordinated two great classes for our beginner family - including safety, theory, and then practice time in the water - and did it all with the most supportive, welcoming and encouraging attitudes. We also had the good fortune to enjoy one of the amazing meals provided in their retreat center - delicious! We'd return in a minute for a surf/yoga retreat or surf lessons and would highly recommend them for anyone looking for great surf lessons in a quiet corner of Costa Rica.Posted on Ellie HVerified Surf Trip of a Lifetime Wow, this was a trip of a lifetime. I was able to go to Surf Expedition with my dad, who had already been once before and loved it so much, he had to go back. From surfing the most fun waves, to enjoying relaxing yoga, and having the most delicious meals made with love, Sebastien, Diane and the staff create a wholesome environment for relaxation and fun. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interesting in progressing in their surfing in a mellow, but breathtaking place.Posted on Susan BVerified Great Surfing, Amazing Food, Wonderful Hosts What a wonderful experience. Our group of 6, 2 adults and 4 teens, had such a great time. The surfing instruction was amazing for beginners, the daily yoga really helped the sore shoulders, and the food was simply EXCELLENT. While not fancy, accommodations were clean and well appointed - we were hardly in our rooms anyway with a full schedule of surfing, eating, and yoga. Some decent bird watching right on the property for those interested. We also very much enjoyed the extra excursion options. Did I mention the food? This was a great way to spend a week as a family - we all progressed in our surfing and had lots of fun along the way. No electronics and really turning off the email was so special. Many thanks to Sebastian and Dianne for their excellent hosting, and also to our excellent surf instructors Josue and Justin. We hope to return!!!Posted on Ann BVerified A Magical Surf & Soul Experience – Can’t Wait to Return! I traveled solo and from the moment I arrived, I felt completely safe, comfortable, and welcomed. The entire experience was truly unforgettable. The location is absolutely stunning.. right on the beach with warm ocean water, exotic birds, and the kind of peaceful energy you dream about. The food was out of this world.. easily the best I’ve ever had. Every meal was prepared with so much love and intention, and you could genuinely feel it with every bite.Sebastian and Dian are amazing hosts.. kind, thoughtful, and passionate about what they do. The yoga classes were grounding and beautiful, and the surf instruction was top-notch. Whether you’re new to surfing or looking to improve, you’ll be in great hands. My room was cozy and comfortable, the perfect space to unwind and recover after an adventurous day. Sebastien and Diane are lovely, Diane's food is worth the trip ! The setting is relaxing, the sea is just a stone's throw away !Posted on sarah kVerified Amazing Experience My stay at Surf Expedition in Pavones, Costa Rica, exceeded all my expectations and truly felt like the trip of a lifetime. I had been searching for a surf camp that was off the beaten path, with a strong focus on learning to surf, and Surf Expedition delivered on every front. As a solo traveler, I was immediately welcomed by Sebastian and Dian, who created such a warm, friendly, and laid-back atmosphere at the camp. Dian's cooking was to die for and the beachfront location was beyond stunning. I can’t recommend Surf Expedition enough and can’t wait to return for another unforgettable experience.

Deep in the Indian Ocean, the Mentawai islands offer a rare combination of raw natural beauty and world-class waves. Crystal-clear water, untouched jungle, and empty horizons — it’s a setting that feels completely removed from the modern world.
It’s not just about the surf, but the atmosphere in between — the stillness, the light, and the sense of being exactly where you’re meant to be.
This is the ultimate surf destination for surfers wanting to chase perfect waves

High-quality beachfront accommodation, smooth logistics, and everything taken care of — so you can focus entirely on surfing and recovery between sessions.
Private speedboat ready each day to take us surfing to the best waves depending on conditions, twice a day.
Between sessions, slow things down: relax by the ocean, recharge in the shade, and enjoy the raw beauty of these remote islands.

This trip is designed to go beyond a single location. By splitting our time between the northern and central Mentawai, we gain access to a much wider variety of waves — effectively doubling the number of surf spots we can explore.
A private speed boat will transport us between our first and second stop. The result is simple: discovering more waves and surfing more variety.

One thing is guaranteed — you’ll come back having surfed some of the best waves of your life.

Because the waves are unlike anything you have surfed before
The Mentawai Islands are home to some of the most perfect waves on the planet. They are the waves intermediate surfers spend years working towards. A milestone in your surf journey. You will surf them with us, build your confidence and step up your surfing.
Because you will surf more in 10 days than most do in a year
We run two to three sessions per day, timed around optimal tides and swell windows. Dawn patrol when the surface is glass, lunch sessions when the other camps are leaving for lunch, late afternoon sessions if you still have some energy left. Our boat gives us access to multiple breaks in the same day — when one spot goes flat or crowded, we move. Every hour in the water counts.
Because your surfing will actually change
In powerful, consistent surf like the Mentawais, progression happens fast. You adapt to faster take off, more powerful waves, harder water face, reading the wave, judging the line up. Everything is more challenging, but you adapt to it and level up quickly. Plus we will have a photographer filming and shooting photos every sessions so that we can quickly see what went well and what can be improved.
Because getting there is half the adventure
Reaching the Mentawais requires commitment — and that is exactly the point. Once you are there, the outside world disappears. The excitement around the trip is something amazing. Once we get there, it’s all about surfing. No noise, no distractions. Just ocean, jungle, and waves.
Because the food will surprise you
Fresh, carefully prepared meals made from local ingredients waiting for you every time you come in from the water. Eating well in a remote island chain is not a given — we make it a priority.
Because you will not come back the same surfer
10 days or surfing in the Mentawais with perfect waves, and nothing else to think about does what months of weekend sessions cannot. You will leave surfing differently. That is the whole point.
To make new friends
Meet other like-minded intermediate surfers who are interested in pushing their surfing and creating new connections.
For the adventure, without the hassle
From the moment you book the trip, we will help you find the best flights, make sure you arrive in time, organize your airport pick up, hotel reservation, send a list of what you need to bring, answer any questions, and take care of your logistic from the moment you arrive in Padang until the moment you fly home. We’ve traveled to Indonesia consistently since 2007 and we partner with the best local crew to make sure everything goes smoothly.
For the local experience
We’ve teamed up with the nicest and most reliable locals of the area to share with you the beauty of their country.
The trip starts in Padang (PDG). It will be cheaper to use a local flight app like Traveloka to book your last flight to Padang. You should plan your international flights to be aarriving in Jakarta in the evening before the official arrival day in Padang. This way you can rest, catch up on the sleep and time difference, fly the next morning to Padang, if there are any delays with flights you don’t have to worry about missing the ferry. Alternatively you could also arrive in Jakarta in the morning and catch a flight to Padang on the same day, but you will be more tired. Once you book, we can recommend some hotels in Jakarta, and the night in Padang is covered in one of the best hotel of the city.
This year, plan your arrival in Padang for September 30th. If you are doing the 12 days, 2 islands trip, plan your return on October 12th. If you are extending to surf and explore 5 more days on the southern island, plan your return trip on October 17th.
We include a pick up and drop off in Padang at any arrival time. We will all meet at the hotel in Padang before dinner on day 1 and likely go out to eat at a great restaurant in the area, or you’re welcome to sleep and order food to your room if you need extra rest.
On the last day, you will come back from the ferry to Padang, stay the night there and catch your departure flight on the following day. That way you do not risk missing your flight if there are any delays with the ferry. Breakfast buffets are included on both days, dinners are not.
This trip is for you if:
This trip is probably not for you if:
A quick gut check: if you are wiping out on more than half the waves you go for, the Mentawais will be more frustrating than fun. Come to Costa Rica first, get the foundation solid, and this trip will be everything you imagined it would be once you’ve been surfing for a minimum of 5+ years.
The normal board you surf on typical 3-5ft waves, one with 2-3 inches more and 3-4L more of volume, ideal for when you get more tired or the waves are faster/heavier, and a step up if you plan on charging bigger waves of 8ft+ (or if you haven’t paddle for a long time).
Bring new leashes, one per board + 1 extra. Good ones (Dakine big wave) Extra set of large fins, wax, reef booties, long sleeve rashguard for sun protection, a 1mm top for reef protection.
International flights from North America typically range from $900–$1,400 USD return depending on your departure city and booking timing. Use Google Flights or Skyscanner to get a current estimate from your city. It’s usually much cheaper to get a flight to Jakarta, Singapore or Bali, and then use the local flights app Traveloka to purchase your last flight to Padang.
